NLS JOINS MALAWI IN COMMEMORATING INTERNATIONAL LITERACY DAY 2026
On Tuesday the 8th of September, the National Library Service (NLS) joined communities and stakeholders at Uliwa Primary School Ground in the area of Senior Chief Wasambo in Karonga District to commemorate International Literacy Day 2026.
Speaking during the commemoration, National Librarian Amoni Gray Kapasule emphasised that literacy in today’s world goes beyond the ability to read, write and perform basic calculations. He said it also includes the ability to access and use digital technology, understand issues affecting communities and distinguish reliable information from misinformation.
“A library is not simply a building where books are stored. A library is a gateway to knowledge,” he said.
Kapasule highlighted the role of libraries in supporting learners, young people, farmers, entrepreneurs and communities through access to books, computers, internet-based information and opportunities to develop digital skills.
His message was echoed by Minister of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare Mary Thom Navicha, who called for greater participation in adult literacy programmes, particularly among men. She said literacy and numeracy skills help people access information, manage businesses and make informed decisions.
The Minister also emphasised the growing importance of digital literacy, calling for support towards internet-based adult learning while encouraging people to learn how to use the internet productively and protect themselves from online scams.
As part of its commitment to promoting literacy and access to knowledge, NLS continues to bring reading and learning opportunities closer to communities through school and community libraries, mobile library services, reading clubs, storytelling and Early Childhood Reading programmes.
During the ceremony, NLS also handed over 124 cartons of books to Kasowa Community, alongside books presented to Chisumbu Primary School, Uliwa Primary School, Lulomo CDSS, Fulirwa CDSS and Thunduti CDSS, to support learning and promote a culture of reading among learners and communities.
NLS remains committed to championing access to knowledge and information and contributing towards a Malawi that reads, a Malawi that is knowledgeable, a Malawi that protects its environment and a Malawi that is prosperous.
