NLS HOSTS GRADUATION OF 47 LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SCIENCE CERTIFICATE STUDENTS
The National Library Service (NLS) has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening library and information services in Malawi by supporting the training and development of library professionals.
This follows the graduation of 47 students who successfully completed the Certificate in Library and Information Science programme for the 2025/2026 academic year, at a ceremony held at NLS Headquarters in Lilongwe on Friday.
The graduates comprised 37 students who obtained credits, four distinctions and six passes, representing a 100 percent completion rate.
Speaking at the event, the Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Dr Ken Ndala, emphasised that librarians and information professionals play a significant role in supporting education, research, innovation and national development.
“Librarians and information professionals have an important role to play in advancing our national priorities, particularly promoting access to quality and inclusive education, strengthening teaching, learning and research, and advancing digital transformation and information literacy,” he said.
Ndala further encouraged graduates to embrace digital technologies and continuous professional development to remain relevant in the evolving information landscape.
The National Librarian, Amon Kapasule, welcomed the graduates and stakeholders, reaffirming NLS’s commitment to working with government and professional bodies to strengthen library services and build a knowledge-driven society.
The Malawi Library Association (MALA) President, Felix Majawa, also highlighted the importance of libraries in promoting literacy, preserving cultural heritage and providing communities with access to reliable information.
Through its collaboration with MALA, NLS continues to contribute to the development of a skilled library workforce capable of supporting learning, promoting a reading culture and expanding access to information.
The Service recognises that investing in library professionals is essential to building strong libraries and ensuring that every Malawian has opportunities to access knowledge and information for personal and national development.
