Floating Library for Mvunguti – Project Update!
Great news from Monkey Bay!
The National Library Service, Monkey Bay Branch, has completed a successful pre-visit to Mvunguti ahead of the launch of the Floating Library for Mvunguti project.
This innovative initiative will deliver books by boat to the remote shoreline community of Mvunguti in Monkey Bay, Mangochi District—an area accessible only by water. The community has an estimated population of 4,280 people across 535 households.
The project aims to support children at Mulungu Apatsa Primary School as well as adults with low literacy levels, including women and local fishermen.
Funded through the Book Aid International (BAI) Community Reading Award, the Floating Library is set to bring life-changing access to information and reading materials where they are needed most.
During today’s visit, the team met with Group Village Headman Kankuta, the head teacher, and engaged with newly identified community volunteers. Encouragingly, local ownership and enthusiasm for the project are very strong.
📅 Official Launch Date: 10 December 2025
